History:
As Germany mobilized its military after Hitler's seizure of power in 1934, the Wehrmacht's Weapons Department began selecting civilian vehicles to employ as military vehicles. Criteria for selection included reliable operation and maintenance, simple and economical construction as well as off-road ability. One light truck that was selected was the L2H 43 Krupp Protze. This truck featured unique 6x4 independent suspension with rear 4-wheel drive and was capable of both transporting personnel and towing light-artillery. The Krupp Protze was popularly known as the "Boxer" because of its air-cooled flat-four square 4-cylinder engine. This in turn allowed a flat sloping engine cover of quite unmistakable shape which also gave excellent for-ward visibility and a low silhouette. The truck was capable of speeds up to 70km/h and featured 4-speed forward and 1 -speed reverse transmission. First mass-produced in 1933, the L2H 43 was replaced in 1936 by the L2H 143, which featured virtually identical exterior, as well as engine output improved from 55hp to 60hp. The Kfz.70 personnel carrier featured an open-topped compartment with wooden benches for passengers and plenty of room for cargo. Production ended in 1942, but the Krupp Protze saw widespread service throughout the war, mainly on early-war period battle fronts in France, Poland, the Balkans, and Russia. "Protze" was a German military term used to describe a horse-drawn artillery carriage.
