About the original:
The Audi quattro is an automotive icon that revolutionized both motorsport and road cars with its permanent all-wheel-drive system. Unveiled at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show, the quattro set new standards for traction, stability, and performance—especially on slippery or unpaved roads.
At its heart was the legendary 2.1-liter five-cylinder turbocharged engine, producing 200 hp in its early versions and known for its distinctive sound. Combined with Audi’s innovative permanent all-wheel-drive system, the quattro delivered superior handling and exceptional road grip, setting it apart from its competitors. Its angular, dynamic design, flared wheel arches, and signature rear spoiler emphasized its sporty nature.
The Audi quattro made its biggest impact in motorsport. In the World Rally Championship (WRC), it achieved spectacular success starting in 1981, dominating with drivers like Hannu Mikkola, Michèle Mouton, and Walter Röhrl. Audi secured the manufacturers' championship in 1982 and 1984, while Stig Blomqvist claimed the drivers' title in 1984.
As a road car, the Audi quattro became a legend. Produced until 1991, it continued to evolve with later versions such as the Sport quattro and the quattro 20V. Today, it remains one of the most sought-after classics of the 1980s and a milestone in the history of all-wheel-drive technology.
